Joseph Ruskey is an Associate Attorney at Combs Waterkotte, where he focuses on criminal defense, litigation, and trial advocacy. He brings strong legal research and writing skills, experience handling complex legal matters, and a commitment to developing persuasive arguments on behalf of his clients. Joseph approaches each case with thorough preparation, close attention to the evidence, and a focus on protecting his clients’ rights both inside and outside the courtroom.
Before joining Combs Waterkotte, Joseph practiced at Kirkland & Ellis, McDermott Will & Emery, Maslon, and UB Greensfelder. His work included drafting motions and pleadings, negotiating with opposing counsel, reviewing extensive records, and advising clients on complex legal issues. These experiences strengthened his ability to identify critical facts, analyze legal challenges, and advocate effectively.
Joseph earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, where he served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology. He previously graduated cum laude from Illinois Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Writing, building a strong foundation in analysis and persuasive communication.
At Combs Waterkotte, Joseph draws on that experience to examine the details of each case, assess the evidence, and develop arguments on his clients’ behalf. He understands that a criminal charge can affect a person’s freedom, family, livelihood, and future, and approaches his work with the preparation and personal attention those stakes demand.
A St. Louis native, Joseph graduated from Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS). Outside the courtroom, you can find Joseph cheering on the Blues and Cardinals, fishing with his family and friends, and playing golf.
