Scott Michael Dunn: Will a conviction of a sex crime affect immigration or deportation in Illinois?
Joshua Boardman: Yes, it absolutely can. Some of that is based on the allegations themselves and some of it’s based on the fact that all of that conduct likely gives rise to a felony level. And so if you are convicted of a felony or being investigated for a felony, then the awareness of your immigration status is going to be escalated or more heightened with the agencies that evaluate that type of thing. And frankly, I’ve got clients that are in different various immigration status during pending cases and that may result in, even though they have not been convicted or found guilty or anything like that, they’re already on holds or detainers or on watch lists, things like that. So even the allegations themselves can trigger higher scrutiny.
