570.130. Fraudulent use of a credit device or debit device — penalty.
Using a stolen or fake credit or debit card is a crime.
It’s illegal to use a credit or debit card if you know it’s stolen, canceled, or not yours. It’s also illegal to cancel a card payment after using it to pay your property taxes.
1. You commit fraud with a credit or debit card if you use it knowing any of the following:
- The card is stolen, fake, or forged;
- The card has been canceled or revoked;
- You’re not allowed to use it for some other reason;
- You use it to pay property taxes and then cancel the payment without a good reason. If you do this to get a property tax receipt for getting license plates, it’s treated as clear evidence of fraud.
2. This offense is a class A misdemeanor unless the total value of what you got (including property tax payments) is $750 or more within 30 days — then it becomes a class E felony.
