Scott Michael Dunn: How long do DUI consequences last in Illinois?
Joshua Boardman: So, I like to differentiate consequences into immediate consequences versus long-term consequences. So, an immediate consequence would be, to me, at sentencing. You know, is it something where you’re facing some jail time? Is it something where you have mandatory requirement and probation conditions? All of those types of quote-unquote consequences are immediately addressable or can be addressable within probationary terms of time, which could be 12 months, could be 24 months, what have you. But the collateral consequences or long-term consequences is if you get a DUI conviction, then that is on your record. And that consequence may not necessarily be, “uh, I’ll have to go to jail.” That consequence can be, “now, I’ve got to disclose that on an employment background check.” So, they can follow you around for the rest of your life.
