18 U.S.C. § 930 – Possession of firearms and dangerous weapons in Federal facilities

This statute makes it illegal to bring firearms or dangerous weapons into most federal buildings or onto federal property.

Section 930 outlines when and where firearms and other dangerous weapons are banned in federal facilities. The seriousness of the offense depends on whether the person acted knowingly and whether anyone was harmed.

(a) General prohibition.
A person may not knowingly possess or bring a firearm or other dangerous weapon into a federal facility. This includes most buildings owned or leased by the United States government.

(b) Possession with intent to commit a crime.
Penalties increase if a person brings a firearm or dangerous weapon into a federal facility with the intent to commit a crime.

(c) Acts resulting in death.
If a firearm or weapon is used in a way that leads to someone’s death inside a federal facility, the penalties can include life imprisonment or other severe consequences.

(d) Exceptions.
The statute includes limited exceptions, such as:

  • lawful performance of official duties by authorized personnel,
  • firearms stored properly in locked containers or vehicles if allowed on that property, and
  • other exceptions defined by federal regulations.

(g) Posting requirement.
For this law to apply, the government must post clear signs at the public entrances of the facility stating that weapons are prohibited.
