Scott Michael Dunn: What crimes require sex offender registration?
Joshua Boardman: In my personal opinion, it’s generally all of the sex crimes that we’ve previously been discussing. You’re looking at criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual abuse, certainly all the predatory criminal sexual abuse or predatory criminal sexual assault. There is registration requirements for convictions regarding minors, like traveling to see a minor. Those types of classifications, anything that I’ve previously mentioned is going to require registration.
Christopher Combs: And of course, there’s different tiers of registration. And I would say we get at least two or three calls a day of people whose cases we did not handle, but who are looking to either get off the registry or maybe, we get this a lot too, “Hey, I used to live in Iowa and they had me as a tier two. Now I moved to Missouri and they’ve reclassified me as a tier three.” So, there’s actually a lot of registration cases that we see. Like I said, at least one or two calls a day regarding registry, “Can I get off? Can I get dropped a tier?” So, luckily we have a former sex crimes prosecutor in our office, Matt Brown. And he was actually selected as one of only 15 prosecutors when he was a prosecutor nationwide to go train on computer sex crimes and things like that. With the FBI. So, that’s a huge asset in our office. He’s very well-versed in sex offender registry and requirements and things like that. But, almost all sex cases, as Josh said, will result, if you are convicted or if you accept a plea and enter a plea of guilt, will require some type of registration.
