18 U.S.C. § 508 – Forgery of Government Transportation Requests
This law makes it a federal crime to forge, alter, or use forged government transportation request forms issued for travel at the expense of the United States.
This statute targets fraud involving official forms or requests used by the United States government to obtain transportation services from common carriers.
It applies to both the creation or alteration of fraudulent transportation request forms and the knowing use, sale, or attempted use of such forms.
What the law prohibits.
A person violates this statute if they knowingly:
- Falsely make, forge, or counterfeit, in whole or in part, any form or request in similitude of a government form used to request transportation on account of the United States or any department or agency thereof
- Knowingly alter any government form or request used to obtain transportation on account of the United States or any department or agency thereof
- Pass, utter, publish, sell, or attempt to pass, utter, publish, or sell any false, forged, counterfeited, or altered transportation request form
Penalties.
A person convicted under this statute shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.
