It’s illegal to scratch off or change a gun’s markings
If someone knowingly damages or removes the identifying marks on a firearm, they can be charged with a weapons crime.
1. A person commits the crime of defacing a firearm if he knowingly defaces any firearm.
2. Defacing a firearm is a class A misdemeanor.
