720 ILCS 5/24-3.8 – Possession of a Stolen Firearm

This law makes it illegal to have a gun you know is stolen.

If someone has a gun they know was stolen or changed in some way to hide it, they are breaking the law. Having a stolen gun is a serious crime called a Class 2 felony.

(a) A person breaks this law if they have a gun that they are not allowed to have and they know the gun was stolen or changed to hide that it was stolen. If someone has a gun with the serial number scratched off or changed, the court can assume they know it was stolen.

(b) Sentence: Having a stolen gun is a Class 2 felony, which is a serious crime that can lead to prison time.
