720 ILCS 5/17-39 – Receipt of Goods or Services

This law makes it illegal to take or keep something valuable if you know or should know it was illegally obtained.

If someone receives goods or services that were gotten through illegal means and knew, or should have known, that they were stolen or obtained unfairly, that person can be punished depending on how much the items are worth.

Sec. 17-39. A person who receives something valuable that was obtained illegally, and knows or should know it was obtained that way, can be charged based on how much it’s worth, and the total received in a 6-month period.

Sentence: If the total value of everything received is $150 or less, the crime is a Class A misdemeanor.

Sentence: If the total value is more than $150, the crime is a Class 4 felony.
