720 ILCS 5/17-2(b)(3) – False Personation of a Peace Officer
This law makes it illegal to pretend to be a law enforcement officer.
This Illinois law says that people cannot pretend to be peace officers, such as the police, highway patrol, sheriffs, or other law enforcement workers. It also makes it a Class 4 felony to violate this law, which is a very serious crime.
(b)(3) A person breaks this law if they pretend to be a peace officer, like a sheriff or police officer.
(b-5) The court can assume someone was pretending to be a peace officer if:
- That person wears or displays official uniforms or badges, without being a part of that organization, or
- Falsely claims to have government authority.
(f) Sentence: A violation of subsection (b)(3) is a Class 4 felony.
