720 ILCS 5/17-11 – Hour Meter Fraud
This law makes it illegal to change or trick an hour meter to hide true use time in order to cheat someone.
This Illinois law says you can’t alter or reset a a farm machine’s hour meter to mislead someone about how much it’s been used. Doing so is a misdemeanor the first time and a felony if you do it again.
17.11 A person commits hour meter fraud when they disconnect, reset, or change the hour meter on a used farm tool – or have someone else do so – to hide or change the real number of hours worked, intending to trick or cheat another person.
Sentence: A first violation of this law is a Class A misdemeanor.
Sentence: A second or later violation is a Class 4 felony.
This law does not apply to honest and standard business practices of people who recycle old car or equipment parts, including odometers or hour meters, for resale.
