720 ILCS 150/1 – Exploitation of a Child by a Parent or Guardian (Harmful or Immoral Employment of a Child)

This law makes it illegal for anyone in charge of a child under 14 to make them perform or work in unsafe, harmful, or inappropriate activities.

This Illinois law protects children under 14 from being forced or allowed to perform unsafe, dangerous, or immoral jobs or acts, like begging, acrobatics, or indecent performances. It allows children to perform in safe places such as schools, churches, or respectful events for learning or practice.

Section 1. It is against the law for anyone who takes care of a child under 14 to make, allow, or give that child to someone to perform in the following ways:

1. Singing, playing instruments, rope or wire walking, dancing, begging, or selling goods on the street (peddling).
2. Performing as a gymnast, contortionist, rider, or acrobat in any place.
3. Taking part in any show or job that is obscene, indecent, immoral, harmful to the child’s health, or dangerous to their life or body.
4. Encouraging or helping a child to do any of these things.

However, this rule does not stop children from being singers or musicians in churches, schools, or academies, or performing at respectable events. It also does not stop them from learning or practicing music.
