18 U.S.C. § 872 – Extortion by Officers or Employees of the United States

Federal law prohibiting extortion committed under color or pretense of federal office.

This statute applies specifically to current or purported federal officers or employees who misuse their position to obtain money or something of value through extortion.

What the law prohibits.
A person violates this statute if they:

  • Are an officer or employee of the United States, or represent themselves as one
  • Act under color or pretense of federal office or employment
  • Commit or attempt an act of extortion

The statute applies even if the person falsely claims to hold federal authority.

Penalties.
If the amount demanded or extorted exceeds $1,000, the offense is punishable by up to three years in prison, a fine under this title, or both.

If the amount does not exceed $1,000, the offense is punishable by up to one year in prison, a fine under this title, or both.
