570.224. Trafficking in stolen identities — possession of documents, exemptions — penalty.

It’s a serious crime to sell or have stolen IDs to commit identity theft

If someone makes, sells, or holds onto personal ID info (like Social Security numbers or driver’s licenses) to steal identities, that’s a felony crime.

1. A person breaks this law if they make, sell, give away, or plan to sell or give away ID documents in order to commit identity theft.

2. If a person has:

  • Five or more IDs from the same person, or
  • IDs from five or more different people,

that counts as proof they meant to use the IDs for identity theft—unless:

  • They’re holding their own IDs, or
  • They have permission from the person whose ID it is.

3. This crime is a class B felony.
