Taking over a bus, threatening the driver, or carrying a hidden weapon on board can lead to serious felony charges

Missouri law makes it a felony to hijack a bus, threaten or attack a bus driver, or carry a hidden deadly weapon while riding—especially if the person uses a weapon during the crime.

1. A person commits bus hijacking if they take over or control a bus using force, violence, or threats. This is a class B felony.

2. Assault with intent to commit bus hijacking means threatening, attacking, or intimidating a bus driver, guard, or attendant to interfere with their job. This is a class D felony.

3. If a person uses a deadly weapon or something that could cause serious injury while trying to hijack a bus or threatening someone on board, they commit a class A felony.

4. Any passenger who boards a bus with a dangerous or deadly weapon hidden on them or in their belongings commits a class D felony, called possession and concealment of a dangerous or deadly weapon. This rule does not apply to:

  • Law enforcement or security officers carrying weapons for work; or
  • Anyone who has permission from the bus owner, their agent, or the person leasing or using the bus.
