574.130. Agroterrorism — penalty — defenses
Spreading disease to animals or crops on purpose is a serious crime
If someone intentionally spreads disease to livestock, crops, or animals, they can be charged with agroterrorism. The punishment depends on how much damage is done.
1. A person commits agroterrorism if they purposely spread any contagious, communicable, or infectious disease to crops, poultry, livestock (as defined in section 267.565), or other animals.
2. Penalties for agroterrorism:
- Class E felony if the damage is less than $10 million;
- Class B felony if the damage is $10 million or more.
3. It is not a crime if the spreading of disease is part of proper medical treatment or legitimate scientific research.
