559.105. Restitution may be ordered, when — limitation on release from probation — amount of restitution.

Courts can order people to pay victims back, and they can’t finish probation or parole until it’s done.

If you’re guilty of a crime, the court can make you pay the victim back for losses. You won’t finish probation or parole until you do.

1. The court can order someone who is guilty or pleads guilty to pay the victim for losses, including costs for taking part in the trial.

2. If the person doesn’t finish paying by the end of probation, the court will extend probation to the longest time allowed.

3. Anyone on parole has to pay restitution. They won’t be released from parole until it’s all paid or until the maximum parole time is served.

4. The court can decide how much restitution is owed. That money can be taken from an inmate’s account while in prison. If money is still owed when released, the prosecutor can collect the rest. If not paid, it can be sent to the parole board for enforcement.
