720 ILCS 646/56 – Methamphetamine Trafficking
This law makes it illegal to bring meth or materials used to make meth into Illinois to sell or produce it.
This statute says that anyone who brings meth, or the materials used to make it, into Illinois on purpose to sell or make meth can be sent to prison for a long time. The prison sentence is doubled compared to regular meth-related crimes.
(a) If someone knowingly brings meth, anhydrous ammonia, or things used to make meth into Illinois to sell or make meth, that person is guilty of methamphetamine trafficking.
(b) Sentence: A person found guilty of meth trafficking will go to prison for at least twice the minimum and at most twice the maximum time that would normally apply for possessing the amount of meth they brought in.
(c) Sentence: If the trafficking involves materials used to make meth (called precursors), the sentence is also doubled – at least twice the minimum and at most twice the maximum prison time for the amount of precursor brought into Illinois.
(d) Sentence: If the trafficking involves anhydrous ammonia, the prison sentence will be at least twice the minimum and at most twice the maximum normally given for that possession crime.
