720 ILCS 5/12-3 – Battery

This law says it’s a crime to hurt someone or touch them in a rude or unwanted way.

In Illinois, battery means hurting another person on purpose or touching them in a way that is meant to insult or upset them. A person convicted of battery can face a Class A misdemeanor charge.

(a) A person commits battery. when they knowingly, without a good legal reason, do one of the following:

  1. Cause physical harm to another person.
  2. Touch another person in a way meant to insult, anger, or provoke them.

(b) Punishment: Battery is considered a Class A misdemeanor, which is one of the more serious types of misdemeanors and can result in jail time, fines, or both.
