720 ILCS 5/11-26 – Traveling to Meet a Child
This law makes it a crime to travel to meet a child for illegal sexual reasons after talking online.
This statute says that anyone who travels to meet a child, or someone they believe is a child, for sexual purposes after communicating through the internet or another electronic device, commits a crime. It is a serious offense in Illinois.
(a) A person breaks this law if they travel, try to travel, or get someone else to travel within Illinois, into Illinois, or out of Illinois by any way of transportation for the purpose of doing something sexual or illegal with a child, or with someone they think is a child. This includes using computers, the internet, or any other electronic device to try to attract, persuade, or trick a child, a child’s parent or guardian, or someone they think is a child or guardian. In this law, a “child” means anyone under 17 years old.
(b) Sentence: Traveling to meet a child is punished as a Class 3 felony.
