720 ILCS 648/20 – Unlawful Purchase or Acquisition of Methamphetamine Precursors Beyond Legal Limits (Restrictions On Purchase, Receipt, Or Acquisition)
This law sets rules for buying or getting certain cold medicine ingredients that can be used to make meth.
This law explains what people must do and how much they can buy when purchasing medicine that contains ingredients like ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. It limits the amount and frequency of these purchases to help prevent illegal drug making.
(a) Anyone 18 or older who wants to buy or get medicine with ingredients like ephedrine or pseudoephedrine must first:
- Show a valid government ID with their name, birth date, and photo.
- Sign a log that lists their name, address, date, and time of purchase, along with the product brand, type, and total amount bought.
(b) No one can buy or get more than 7,500 milligrams of medicine with ephedrine or pseudoephedrine in a 30-day period.
(c) A person cannot buy more than 2 packages of this type of medicine in one shopping trip.
(d) A person cannot buy more than one small “convenience package” from a store that is not a pharmacy counter in a single day.
(e) These limits do not apply to doctors, pharmacists, or others who get this medicine legally to give or prescribe it properly as allowed by law.
(f) No one may buy or get this kind of medicine for someone else to help them break the law or get around these limits.
