720 ILCS 5/11-6.6 – Solicitation to Meet a Child

This law makes it illegal for an adult to ask or plan to meet a child for an unlawful reason without a parent’s knowledge.

This statute says that adults cannot use the internet, phone, or any device to ask or plan to meet someone under 17 for illegal reasons. It also explains the punishment based on how much older the adult is than the child.

(a) A person aged 18 or older breaks this law if they use a computer, cellphone, or other device to ask, attract, or arrange a meeting with a child–or someone they think is a child–without the child’s parent or guardian knowing, and the meeting is not for a lawful purpose.

(b) Sentence: Normally, this crime is a Class A misdemeanor. But if the adult thinks they are 5 or more years older than the child, it becomes a Class 4 felony.

(c) In this law, “child” means anyone under 17 years old. The word “computer” has the same meaning given in Section 17-0.5 of this Code.
