Scott Michael Dunn: What is an order of protection and how does that affect a sex crimes case?

Christopher Combs: I’ll let Josh handle this.

Joshua Boardman: Yes, so in it’s most general sense, an order of protection is going to be based on findings of stalking, harassment, abuse, those types of what I would call those general terms or general allegations. It is a civil mechanism by which a petitioner can go in and say that they feel threatened or abused or harassed or stalked. And oftentimes the allegations that they put in those petitions are identical to what they’ve given to law enforcement or that the state’s attorney’s office have. But what it does is just acts as another shield for that victim or for that witness based on those allegations.
