720 ILCS 5/33E-8 – Bribery of Inspector Employed by Contractor

This law makes it a crime to bribe or take a bribe from an inspector working on a government construction project.

This statute says it is illegal to offer or accept a bribe to wrongly approve or certify work on a government project. Both the person giving and the person taking the bribe can face felony charges.

(a) A person commits bribery of an inspector when they give or offer money, gifts, or anything valuable to someone working for a contractor or subcontractor on a government project. The goal of the bribe is to get that person to wrongly say that work or materials on the project were properly done or completed. This is a Class 4 felony.

(b) Any inspector or worker employed by a contractor or subcontractor on a government project who takes a bribe–knowing it was meant to unfairly influence their decision about work quality or completion–and then gives false approval, commits a Class 3 felony. If they don’t report the bribe offer to the police, the Attorney General, or the State’s Attorney in that area, they commit a Class 4 felony.
