720 ILCS 5/33-8 – Legislative Misconduct
This law makes it illegal for lawmakers to take money or gifts to influence their official actions.
This Illinois law says that a member of the General Assembly breaks the law if they accept money or gifts in exchange for using their position to help or hurt certain bills or government actions. Anyone who does this commits a serious felony crime.
(a) A member of the General Assembly commits legislative misconduct when he or she knowingly takes or receives, directly or indirectly, money or something valuable from a person, company, or corporation in return for the way they vote, influence, or act on a bill, resolution, budget, or any other official action.
(b) Sentence: Legislative misconduct is a Class 3 felony, meaning it is a serious crime that can lead to prison time and other penalties.
