720 ILCS 5/33-1 – Bribery (Of A Public Official)
This law makes it a crime to offer, ask for, or accept something valuable to influence what a public official or juror does.
This law says it’s against the rules to pay, offer, or take money, gifts, or favors in order to sway what a public worker, juror, or witness decides or does in their job. Doing this is a serious crime called a Class 2 felony.
(a) It is bribery to offer or promise something valuable to a public worker, juror, or witness to make them act a certain way in their job, when they are not supposed to take it.
(b) It is also bribery to offer or promise something valuable to someone you think is a public worker, juror, or witness, even if you are wrong, if the thing offered is something that person would not be allowed by law to take.
(c) It is bribery to offer or promise something valuable to someone so they will try to get a public worker, juror, or witness to act a certain way in their job.
(d) It is bribery if a person accepts, keeps, or agrees to take something valuable knowing it was offered to make them act a certain way in their job as a public worker, juror, or witness.
(e) It is bribery if a person asks for, receives, or agrees to take something valuable in exchange for promising to influence what a public worker, juror, or witness does in their job.
“Tenders” means giving or offering something valuable on purpose with the intent to influence someone’s actions.
Sentence: Bribery is a Class 2 felony, which means it is a serious crime that can lead to prison time.
