720 ILCS 5/31-5 – Concealing or Aiding a Fugitive

This law says it’s a crime to help someone hide or escape after they’ve broken the law.

If you help someone who committed a crime avoid getting caught, and you aren’t a close family member, you can be charged with a felony. This includes hiding them, keeping quiet about the crime, or helping them run away.

(a) Anyone who is not the husband, wife, parent, child, brother, or sister of a person who committed a crime, and who tries to keep that person from being caught by hiding them, helping them, or hiding what they know about the crime, is guilty of a Class 4 felony.

(b) Anyone 18 or older who, on purpose, helps a person who committed a crime get away from the town, county, state, country, or any area where they should be arrested or charged is guilty of a Class 4 felony.
