720 ILCS 5/30-1 – Treason
This law says that a person can be found guilty of treason if they fight against the State of Illinois or help its enemies.
This law explains what it means to commit treason in Illinois, how someone can be proven guilty of it, and what the punishment is if they are convicted.
(a) A person who owes loyalty to Illinois commits treason if they knowingly do any of the following:
- Fight or try to start a war against the State of Illinois.
- Help or support Illinois’s enemies by giving them aid or comfort.
(b) A person cannot be found guilty of treason unless two witnesses saw the same act of treason, or the person admits it in open court.
(c) Sentence: Treason is punished as a Class X felony, which is one of the most serious crimes in Illinois.
