720 ILCS 5/29D-35 – Hindering Prosecution of Terrorism
This law makes it illegal to help someone who committed or caused a terrorist act avoid being caught or punished.
If a person helps a terrorist or someone who caused a major disaster, knowing what that person did, they can face very serious prison time – even life in prison depending on the harm caused.
(a) A person breaks this law if they help someone who committed terrorism or caused a big disaster and they know that the person they helped did those things.
(b) The crime of helping a terrorist is a Class X felony. The punishment depends on the outcome of the terrorist act:
- Sentence: 20 years to life in prison if no one died because of the terrorism.
- Sentence: Mandatory life in prison if the terrorism caused someone’s death.
If the offender was under 18 when the crime happened, they are sentenced under special youth sentencing rules.
