720 ILCS 5/24-4 – Failure to Keep a Register (By a Dealer)
This law says that gun sellers must keep records of all handgun sales and show them to police if asked.
This Illinois law requires gun dealers who sell smaller, concealable firearms to keep a written record of every sale or gift. The seller must record detailed information about the buyer and let police see the records and inventory upon request. If a dealer fails to do this, it is a Class B misdemeanor.
(a) Any person who sells small firearms that can be hidden on a person must keep a written list of all guns sold or given away, unless they are a manufacturer selling to a wholesaler or a wholesaler selling to a retailer.
(b) The written list must include the following details:
Date of the sale or gift.
Name, address, age, and job of the buyer or recipient.
Price, type, description, and number of the firearm.
The reason the buyer is getting the firearm.
(c) If a police officer asks, the seller must show the list and allow the officer to look at all the guns in stock.
(d) Sentence: Breaking this law is a Class B misdemeanor, which means it is a low-level crime that can lead to fines or short jail time.
