720 ILCS 5/21.2-2 – Interference with a Public Institution of Education

This law makes it illegal to use force, threats, or violence to disrupt people or activities at a public school, college, or university.

This Illinois law says that no one can use force or threats to block, disturb, or stay without permission at a public school or college. It protects students, teachers, employees, and visitors so the school can run safely and normally.

A person breaks this law if they, without permission from the school, use or threaten force or violence while on school grounds or in school buildings or facilities. This includes any location owned, run, or controlled by the school.

(1) It is illegal to knowingly stop a school board member, principal, employee, student, or invited guest from doing any of the following:

  • (A) Moving freely within the school or campus.
  • (B) Using the school’s property, buildings, or facilities.
  • (C) Entering or leaving school property or facilities.

(2) It is also illegal to knowingly block, disturb, or interfere with any of the following:

  • (A) School staff such as a principal, superintendent, or teacher while they do their school duties.
  • (B) The learning or educational activities of students or staff at the school.

(3) It is against the law to knowingly stay in any school building, property, or facility after being told to leave.
