720 ILCS 5/17-60 – Promotion of Pyramid Sales Schemes

This law makes it illegal to run or sell spots in a pyramid scheme.

This Illinois law says that anyone who tries to sell or join others in a pyramid-type money scheme can be charged with a misdemeanor. It also explains what counts as a pyramid sales scheme.

(a) A person who knowingly sells, offers to sell, or tries to sell the right to take part in a pyramid scheme commits a Class A misdemeanor.

Sentence: This means it is a crime that can bring serious penalties, like fines or jail time.

(b) A “pyramid sales scheme” means any plan or setup where someone pays money or gives something valuable to join with the hope of making money mainly by getting other people to join. The plan is not supposed to be based mainly on selling real products or services to customers. Paying for basic sales materials used only for demonstrations and not for resale does not count as part of the illegal plan.
