720 ILCS 5/17-52 – Aggravated Computer Tampering

This law makes it a serious crime to use a computer to disrupt important services or put people in danger.

This Illinois law says someone commits aggravated computer tampering if they knowingly use a computer to interfere with government or utility services, or if their actions could seriously hurt or kill someone. The punishment depends on how dangerous the act is.

(a) A person commits aggravated computer tampering when they do computer tampering and knowingly:

  1. Disrupt or interfere with important services or activities of the state, local government, or a public utility.
  2. Do something that could cause death or serious injury to one or more people.

(b) Sentence:

  1. If the crime involves disrupting important services as described in part (a)(1), it is a Class 3 felony.
  2. If the crime involves actions that could cause death or serious harm as described in part (a)(2), it is a Class 2 felony.
