720 ILCS 5/17-30(b) – Defacing Identification Marks On Construction Equipment
This law makes it illegal to change or remove the ID numbers from construction machines or equipment.
This Illinois law says that anyone who knowingly alters or removes identification marks from construction equipment can face criminal charges. It also lists the level of punishment based on what part of the law is broken.
(b) Construction equipment identification defacement. A person breaks this law if they knowingly change, remove, or damage any serial number, product ID, part number, or other identifying mark attached to construction or demolition equipment. This applies to all kinds of construction machines and parts, whether they are stationary, mobile, or self-propelled, and used for tasks like building roads, bridges, tunnels, sewers, or other projects.
(d) Sentence:
- If a person breaks part (b) of this law, it is a Class A misdemeanor.
(f) Definitions.
“Commercial context” means running a business for profit where selling or storing household appliances is the main or an important part of the business.
“Household appliance” means any gas or electric device used at home for entertainment or chores, such as refrigerators, freezers, ovens, radios, TVs, vacuums, toasters, or dishwashers.
“Manufacturer’s identification number” means a serial number or code placed on an appliance by the maker to identify that exact item or group of items.
