720 ILCS 5/17-30(a) – Unlawful Sale of Household Appliances with Defaced Serial Numbers
This law makes it illegal to sell household appliances with missing or changed serial numbers if you intend to trick someone.
This Illinois law says that it is against the law to sell home appliances with damaged or missing manufacturer identification numbers when done to deceive or cheat someone. It also explains what types of appliances and businesses this law covers and the level of punishment for breaking it.
(a) Unlawful sale of household appliances. A person breaks the law if they knowingly try to sell, within a business setting, any home appliance that has a missing, scratched off, destroyed, or changed manufacturer number, and they do this to trick or cheat someone.
(d) Sentence:
- If the total value of the appliances is more than $1,000, the crime is a Class 4 felony. If the total value is $1,000 or less, the crime is a Class B misdemeanor.
(e) A person will not be punished if they accidentally fail to follow part (a) of this law.
(f) Definitions.
“Commercial context” means running a business for profit where selling or storing household appliances is the main or an important part of the business.
“Household appliance” means any gas or electric device used at home for entertainment or chores, such as refrigerators, freezers, ovens, radios, TVs, vacuums, toasters, or dishwashers.
“Manufacturer’s identification number” means a serial number or code placed on an appliance by the maker to identify that exact item or group of items.
