720 ILCS 5/17-21 – Obstructing Service Meters

This law makes it illegal to mess with or block a meter that measures electricity, gas, or other services to cheat the owner.

This Illinois law says it’s a crime to purposely change or block a service meter to trick or cheat the owner. Doing this is considered a Class B misdemeanor, which is a criminal offense.

Sec. 17-21. A person breaks this law when they inteionally try to trick someone by altering a meter, register, or other device that measures electricity, gas, water, or another service, without the consent of the owner, so that it no longer measures the service correctly.

Sentence: Breaking this law is a Class B misdemeanor, which is a criminal charge that can lead to fines or jail time.
