720 ILCS 5/17-20 – Obstructing Gas, Water, or Electric Current Meters

This law makes it illegal to tamper with utility meters or steal gas, water, or electricity.

This law says a person cannot mess with, damage, or alter a gas, water, or electric meter to get free services or cheat a company. Doing so is a Class B misdemeanor, meaning it’s against the law but less serious than a felony.

Sec. 17-20. A person breaks this law when they knowingly and on purpose do something to damage, block, change, or stop a gas, water or electric meter, so that it no longer works properly. It is also illegal to help someone else do so. Lastly, it is illegal for someone to set up a gas, water, or electric line that avoids the meter, unless they have the company’s permission.

Sentence: Anyone who does this commits a Class B misdemeanor.
