720 ILCS 5/17-11 – Odometer Fraud

This law makes it illegal to change or hide how far a vehicle has been driven to trick someone.

This Illinois law says that anyone who changes or hides the real number of miles on a car to cheat someone is committing a crime. Doing it once is a misdemeanor, but doing it again is a felony. Honest recycling businesses that reuse meters are not breaking this law.

17.11: A person commits odometer fraud when they disconnect, reset, or change the odometer on a used vehicle – or has someone else do that – to hide or change the actual miles, intending to cheat another person.

Sentence: A first-time violation of this law is a Class A misdemeanor.

Sentence: A second or later violation is a Class 4 felony.

This law does not apply to people or businesses that legally recycle or repair odometers or hour meters as part of reusing parts for resale.
