720 ILCS 5/17-11.5 – Tampering With a Security, Fire, or Life Safety System

This law makes it illegal to damage or mess with safety or security systems on purpose.

If someone breaks, destroys, or causes a safety or security system to stop working, they are committing a crime. This includes things like fire alarms, security cameras, emergency phones, and similar equipment used to protect people and property.

(a) A person commits tampering with a security, fire, or life safety system when they knowingly damage, break, disable, or cause any part of these systems to stop working. This includes physical or electronic parts such as card readers, locks, alarm systems, security cameras, monitors, video recorders, fire sprinklers, smoke detectors, emergency phones, lights, control panels, and any related computer parts, wires, or power sources.

(b) Sentence: If someone is found guilty of this crime, it is considered a Class 4 felony.
