720 ILCS 5/12-5.1a – Aggravated Criminal Housing Management

This law makes it a serious crime for a landlord to hide dangerous housing problems that lead to someone’s death.

This Illinois law says that if a landlord’s unsafe property conditions cause someone’s death and the landlord tries to hide the danger, that person can be charged with a felony called aggravated criminal housing management.

(a) A person commits aggravated criminal housing management when they are already guilty of criminal housing management and:

  1. The unsafe condition that the landlord was responsible for helped cause another person’s death.
  2. The landlord recklessly hid or tried to hide the dangerous condition that caused the death.

(b) Sentence: This crime is punished as a Class 4 felony, which is a serious criminal offense in Illinois.
