720 ILCS 5/12-5.1 – Criminal Housing Management

This law makes it illegal for someone managing housing to let it become unsafe for others.

This Illinois law says that if someone is in charge of a home or apartment building and allows its conditions to become dangerous for people living there, they can be charged with a crime. The first offense is a misdemeanor, but doing it again becomes a felony.

(a) A person commits criminal housing management when they are in charge of a house or apartment–like an owner, manager, or landlord–and carelessly let the property become or stay in bad shape in a way that could harm someone’s health or safety.

(b) Sentence: The punishment for criminal housing management is:

  1. The first time, it is a Class A misdemeanor.
  2. For any more times, it becomes a Class 4 felony.
