720 ILCS 5/12-4.5 – Tampering with Food, Drugs or Cosmetics

This law makes it a serious crime to add harmful substances to food, medicine, or beauty products being sold or eaten.

This Illinois law says it’s illegal to knowingly put something dangerous into food, medicine, or cosmetics that people might buy or use. Doing so can cause serious harm and is punished as a Class 2 felony.

(a) If someone purposely adds anything that could kill or seriously hurt someone into food, drugs, or cosmetics that people can buy or use, that person is guilty of tampering with food, drugs, or cosmetics.

(b) Punishment: Tampering with food, drugs, or cosmetics is treated as a Class 2 felony, which means it has serious legal consequences.
