720 ILCS 5/10-8 – Unlawful Sale of a Public Conveyance Travel Ticket to a Minor
This law makes it illegal to sell a travel ticket for a bus, train, plane, or similar vehicle to a minor under 17 without their parent or guardian’s permission, if the trip goes outside Illinois.
This Illinois law says that no one can sell a travel ticket to an unemancipated minor under 17 years old for a trip out of state unless a parent or guardian gives consent. If someone knowingly does this or doesn’t check the minor’s age carefully, they can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor.
(a) It is against the law to sell a ticket for travel on any public vehicle–like a bus, train, plane, or cab–to someone under 17 who isn’t legally independent, if the trip is leaving Illinois, and the seller either knows the person is underage or doesn’t take proper steps to check their age.
(b) Evidence: If the seller asked for and looked at proof of the buyer’s age and reasonably trusted it, that can be used as evidence to defend them in a case under this law.
(c) Definition: “Public conveyance” means any vehicle that carries people for money, such as an airplane, boat, bus, railroad train, or taxicab.
(d) Sentence: Breaking this law is a Class C misdemeanor, which is a minor criminal offense.
