720 ILCS 5/32-1 – Compounding a Crime

This law says it’s illegal to accept or offer something of value in exchange for not reporting or helping to prosecute a crime.

This Illinois law makes it a petty offense to take or give any kind of payment or reward in return for a promise not to tell the police about a crime or not to help with the case.

(a) A person commits compounding a crime when he or she knowingly receives or offers something of value to another person in exchange for a promise not to report, charge, or help in the prosecution of someone who committed a crime.

(b) Sentence: Compounding a crime is punished as a petty offense.
