720 ILCS 690/1 – Use of Intoxicating Compounds

This law says people can’t sniff or inhale certain chemicals on purpose to get high.

This Illinois law makes it illegal to breathe in, drink, or sniff certain chemicals to feel dizzy, high, or act strangely. It also lists what punishments apply if someone breaks the law or sells these substances.

Sec. 1. Use prohibited. No one is allowed to inhale, drink, or take in chemicals like glue, paint thinner, or other listed substances to feel high, dizzy, or behave in a confused or silly way. If someone feels this way from using these chemicals, they are considered intoxicated under this law.

Sec. 4. Sentence.

(a)Sentence: Usually, breaking this law is a Class C misdemeanor the first time, and if someone does it again, it becomes a Class A misdemeanor.

(b) Sentence:

  1. If someone knowingly uses chemicals that have atropine, hyoscyamine, or scopolamine, it is a Class A misdemeanor.
