720 ILCS 5/21-9 – Criminal Trespass to a Place of Public Amusement

This law makes it a crime to go into or stay in restricted areas at places like stadiums or theaters when you are not allowed to.

This statute says that if someone goes into or stays in a restricted area at a place where the public goes for fun, like a game or concert, without permission, they can be charged with a serious crime. It also explains how warnings must be given and what kind of punishment can follow.

(a) A person breaks this law if they knowingly go into or stay in a part of a public amusement place–like a playing field, stage, or dressing room–after being told that the public is not allowed there.

(a-5) A person also breaks the law if they use fake ID or lie about who they are to get into or stay in a restricted part of a public amusement place. This rule does not apply to police officers or government officials doing their jobs.

(b) People who own, rent, or work at the place, or who perform there, can use reasonable force to stop and remove someone trespassing. But if they use more than reasonable force, they could face criminal charges.

(c) Someone is considered to have received notice not to enter if they are told in person or in writing, see a clear sign saying so, or hear an announcement over the loudspeaker telling people to stay out.

(d) A “place of public amusement” means places like stadiums, theaters, or any location where shows, sports, or other entertainment happen, whether or not you have to pay to get in.

(e) Sentence: This type of trespass is a Class 4 felony. The court must fine the person at least $1,000 and also require between 30 and 120 hours of community service if available. The judge may add other probation conditions too.
