720 ILCS 5/17-2(b)(4) – False Personation of a Peace Officer While Armed

This law makes it illegal to pretend to be a law enforcement officer while carrying a deadly weapon.

This Illinois law says that people cannot pretend to be peace officers, such as the police, highway patrol, sheriffs, or other law enforcement workers, and that it is especially bad if that person is carrying a gun or other weapon. Breaking this law is a Class 3 felony, which is a very serious crime.

(b)(4) A person breaks this law if they pretend to be a police officer while carrying a deadly weapon.

(b-5) The court can assume someone was pretending to be a peace officer if:

  1. That person wears or displays official uniforms or badges, without being a part of that organization, or
  2. Falsely claims to have government authority.

(f) Sentence: A violation of subsection (b)(4) is a Class 3 felony.
