569.099. Tampering with Computer Users — Penalties
Illegally accessing or blocking someone’s computer use is a crime
Under Missouri law, it’s illegal to interfere with another person’s use of a computer system without proper permission — especially if it involves fraud or theft.
1. A person commits this offense if they knowingly and without permission:
- (1) Access or cause someone else to access a computer, system, or network; or
- (2) Block or deny service to someone who’s allowed to use that system.
2. Penalties depend on the intent and financial damage:
- Class A misdemeanor: For basic unauthorized access or service denial.
- Class E felony: If done to commit fraud or steal property worth $750 or more.
