18 U.S.C. § 499 – Forgery of Military, Naval, or Official Passes
This law makes it a federal crime to forge, misuse, or improperly allow use of military, naval, or official government passes.
This statute applies to passes or permits issued by or under the authority of the United States for military, naval, or other official purposes. These documents are often used to grant access, identification, or privileges reserved for specific individuals.
What the law prohibits.
A person violates this statute if they knowingly:
- Falsely make, forge, counterfeit, alter, or tamper with a military, naval, or official pass or permit
- Use or possess such a pass with intent to defraud, knowing it is forged or altered
- Impersonate or falsely represent themselves as a person to whom the pass was issued (or falsely claim not to be that person)
- Willfully allow another person to use a pass or permit issued solely for their own use
Penalties.
A conviction under this statute can result in a fine, up to 5 years in federal prison, or both.
